How To Attract A Following And Become A Great Leader in 3 Simple Steps

Think for a moment about some the great leaders of our time. You have leaders in business like Trump.  Leaders in entertainment like Oprah, in sports like Ali, in political movements like Martin Luther King, and even leaders in marketing brands like Apple.  Whether or not you like these people and brands…have you ever wondered ‘Why’ the masses look up to them? How do they stir the crowds and rally the troupes around them and their causes.

What is it about them that affects their followers to such a degree that

they tune their antennas onto these people like a heat-seeking missile?

At it’s core, leadership is not about control OVER people (although in some cases it can be used for ‘evil’), but in most cases leaders are looking to leave a legacy. To be remembered.  Because when it’s all said and done…at the end of the day…you leave this earth without your millions, with no fancy clothes or sports cars, and without a huge mansion.  And when people are surrounding your grave site, they won’t look back and say “Wow, do you remember that guy’s amazing red Ferrari.

And most great leaders realize this.  At the deepest core of these powerhouse people (and brands) the main motivator is to empower people.  That’s right…empowerment.  It’s because nothing feels better than when you help people to see the possibility in THEMSELVES.  In most competitive fields, people are always looking to be the best that they can be.  But its the leaders that use their potential to such a high degree that it propels them into the spotlight. And at that very moment, they realize that they now have a responsibility to help others to see the potential in themselves.  These leaders excel to such a high standard that they inspire others to be, do, and have more.  Much more!

Now we can’t forget however, that a strong leader innately does not feel complete without a group of followers.  So is it possible for you to train to become a leader in your field?

How To Attract A Following And Become A Great Leader in 3 Simple Steps

1) Become So Good At What You Do That You Cannot Be Ignored.

This is not for the faint at heart, since it takes work, effort, dedication and most of all desire.  There is a great book called Outliers written by Malcolm Gladwell that talks about how great people become that way.  He explains that to truly become a master at your craft will take approximately 10,000 devoted hours to learning and growing in any particular area.  Here’s the problem though…most peopl e won’t d o it.  They simply will not put in the effort and so they won’t gain the rewards. Most people are looking for a shortcut, a secret code, a magic bullet…when in fact, you already possess all you need.  It all comes back to c o ntinually working on yourself.  You see, you can’t be a leader if you have nothing to offer.  You first have to fill up your own cup of knowledge before you have anything to share with others.  Pick yo ur passion.  Then live it, breath it, and make a part of every fiber of your being.  Then set out to systematically spend time…yes that precious limited commodity called time, into becoming the best you can be in that field.  That me ans reading, listening, learning and growing.  And most of all Thinking and Visioning yourself as a leader. Think about how would you would act?  What would that person do? What would they say?  You probably already know…but most people are too scared to take action in that direction because…what would others think? Don’t short change yourself.  Step out boldly…you CAN do it.

2) Create “Inspirational Dissatisfaction” In Other People.

When you start filling up your own cup of knowledge…something will naturally begin to bubble up inside of you. Then a trigger will go off and you’ll know that it’s time to press yourself into others.  It might be a story that you want to share, a good book, a video, a blog post…or some original ideas that you can’t keep bottled up anymore.  You might share these with friends, family members, online, or offline.  But as you push yourself to get out of your comfort zone and chase your passion…you’ll find that your passion starts chasing you back.  You see we all have an innate nature about us which says we want to grow and expand.  Nobody was put on this earth to shrink and shrivel.  So as you’re ‘loving up’ your passion and mastering your craft (whether its business, sports, music, or even knitting)…if you truly put yourself ‘out there‘ you’ll start to attract others who are on the same wave length as you.  And they’ll start thinking…”Hey, this person is hitting a cord with me!“  Then YOUR Inspiration, will create an Inspirational Dissatisfaction within them.  And ‘they‘ will want what you have.  So how do they ‘get‘ what you seem to have? By following you…see now you’re learning how to become a leader.  We look up to leaders: Trump, Oprah, Ali, King, Apple because we want what they have…not only externally, but internally…their simply being themselves in public, and sometimes it’s hard to let ourselves out of the box and do that.

3) People Must Believe That You Can Take Them Somewhere.

Here’s the reality…people will not follow you as a leader unless they believe that you will take them somewhere.  So how do you do that?  Well you start off by acting like somebody who’s go ing places.  Somebody who’s on a mission.  You’re going…regardless of whether people are coming or not.  That’s attractive!  You don’t come from a place of need, you come from a place of purpose.  Think about it… w ho w ere Tru mp, Oprah, Ali, and King BEFORE they were Trump, Oprah, Ali and King?  They never needed us to be justified as leaders.  They simply did what they did…and we followed.  But that’s not normal you say. That’s right!  It’s because leaders are NOT normal…that’s why we follow them.  Normal people don’t follow normal people…they follow those who stand out. That’s what makes them leaders in the first place.

So let’s sum this up…

If you truly want to be a leader in your field…think about what kind of legacy you want to live. How do you want to be remembered by your friends, family, community, kids and great-grandkids.  Then realize that you’ll only get there by empowering other people.  And you do that by first filling up your own cup.  Investing that 10,000 hours in becoming a master of your passion.  Then you start sharing your knowledge with ‘like-minds’ and creating inspirational dissatisfaction in others…getting them to see that they too can become a better version of themselves.  And finally…you walk, talk and act like ‘somebody’ who is going places and invite people to join you along the way.

Believe in yourself, believe that you have greatness, believe that you are a leader…then go show the world that you are who you believe.

Go Forth…And Prosper!
